What is an Independent Medical Evaluation (IME)?
An IME is an objective impartial evaluation by a physician who has not had prior contact with or knowledge of an injured party.
Why get an IME?
IME’s can answer several questions in regard to a complex medical claim. Examples include causation, clarification of diagnosis, reasonableness of treatment rendered, determination of maximal medical improvement (MMI), permanent partial impairment, need for work restrictions, prognosis, and need for and nature of future medical treatment.
Who can request an IME?
IME’s are generally requested by insurance adjusters, attorneys, and case managers. Rarely, an IME is requested by an individual claimant.
What happens during an IME?
The doctor performing the IME will have reviewed medical records, job descriptions, etc prior to the IME appointment. These records will be reviewed, a history taken, and physical examination completed. The physical exam may involve taking several various measurements.
